About the Kakapo
Discover the fascinating story of the world's only flightless parrot
A Unique Bird
The Kakapo (Strigops habroptilus) is a nocturnal, flightless parrot native to New Zealand. With its moss-green feathers, owl-like face, and substantial weight of up to 4kg, it is truly one of the most distinctive birds on our planet.
Critically Endangered
Once abundant throughout New Zealand, today fewer than 250 Kakapo remain, making it one of the world's rarest birds. Each individual has a name and is closely monitored by dedicated conservation teams.
Remarkable Behaviors
Kakapo are known for their distinctive "boom" calls during mating season and their unusual breeding system. Males create bowl-shaped depressions in the ground, from which they emit low-frequency booming calls that can travel up to 5 kilometers to attract females.
